This paper deals with the analysis of long-distance swimming, particularly the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle. It presents the swimming technique for long distances as well as the tactical and conditioning aspects that influence success in these disciplines. It also highlights the morphological characteristics of successful swimmers, emphasizing factors such as body size, limb length, and the ratio of muscle mass to subcutaneous fat. This work shows that long-distance swimmers are slightly smaller than sprinters or middle distance swimmers, but have a similar ratio of body size to limb length. The agility of long-distance swimmers is comparable to that of swimmers in other events, while their level of explosive power and speed is lower than that of sprint swimmers. High oxygen uptake is crucial for long-distance success, and the development of VO2max is an essential part of training for long-distance swimmers, who have a different freestyle technique to sprinters. Specific conditioning aspects for long-distance swimming are less dry land-based training, a greater focus on developing repetitive strength, and a high volume of training. The tactical approach to competition is one of the most important factors in achieving top placings, regardless of the swimmer's physical preparation. Although long-distance swimming has many similarities with shorter competitions, it has its special characteristics that must be carefully considered to achieve top results.
