Middle blockers have a key role on the field, players in that position, as well as in others, have certain characteristics that make them stand out. This specific group of players, known as "intermediates", stands out for its exceptional mobility, outstanding motor skills and high placed blocks. Their ability to perform a variety of attacks further enriches the game, giving teams the possibility of a variety of tactical strategies. Therefore, middle blockers were considered an indispensable link in the team, whose importance goes beyond statistics alone. The main goal of this paper was to determine how 37 middle blockers perceive their role in volleyball. The research respondents have an average chronological age of 19.97±2.98 years and come from different parts of Croatia. All of them participated in the highest level of the competition, the Superleague, in the 2022/2023 season. It is a representative sample because, taking into account that each team has four middle blockers in the registered lineup for the competition, all volleyball players who play this role are included. It was also taken into account that, in the event that not all volleyball players respond in the position of middle blocker, that each club is represented by a minimum of three volleyball players in one senior team of the Superleague competition who play the role of middle blocker. A newly constructed anonymous questionnaire Perception of middle blockers about their playing role in volleyball was used, which measured their perception of motivation, self-confidence, responsibility, success, satisfaction, as well as the influence of coaches and the importance of psychological preparation in their playing role in senior volleyball. The obtained research results show that middle blockers perceive their playing role as extremely responsible and important, and show high motivation and self-confidence during the game. The importance of additional support for female athletes in their personal development is emphasized, since they face a lack of professional psychological support within the clubs. Also, the results confirm that middle blockers have a lower level of self-esteem and that in this part of the psychological characteristics, one can additionally influence and act.
