Plyometrics is a specific method of resistance training that uses SSC (muscle shortening and relaxation cycle) exercises with the aim of maximizing the mechanical output of muscles (force, work and strength) in explosive movements. Simply put, it is the link between strength and speed. The classical approach to categorizing plyometric exercises can be problematic because the very name of the exercise does not actually provide insight into its intensity. For example, deep jumps are in the category of high-intensity exercise. This is of course true if we perform a jump from one meter but what if we jump from a height of ten centimeters. Can this still be called a high-intensity exercise just because the name of the exercise says a deep jump? I'd say no. Thus, we cannot place faith in a particular category solely on the basis of its name but need to consider some variables that allow us insight into the physiological needs and intensity of exercise. Whether we are talking about low or high intensity, plyometrics involves a collision of body and ground. The mechanical factors that affect the force of this “collision” are what we should use to substantiate our plyometric progressions. Impact forces are the best estimate of stress on an athlete. These mechanical factors are: the speed with which we hit the ground, the time of impact with the ground, the speed of horizontal movement and the distribution of load on impact.
