Coordination stands out as one of the key motor abilities of humans, but until recently children with difficulties in the development of coordination were considered simply "clumsy". However, today there is much more talk about developmental coordination disorder, a neurodevelopmental disorder that has a significant impact on the ability to acquire new motor skills, perform self-care activities, and academic skills. In addition, developmental coordination disorder is associated with a number of comorbidities, as well as secondary difficulties that encompass the entire psychophysical status of a person. Today, we encounter a growing number of children who are dealing with a developmental coordination disorder, and modern technology and lack of physical activity further contribute to the non-recognition and progression of this disorder. Due to the specificity of the disorder itself, a number of experts actively participate in the process of diagnosis and treatment, among which kinesiologists are indispensable members. The main goal of this paper is to highlight the key characteristics of this disorder and to increase awareness of children who face developmental coordination disorder. Special emphasis is placed on timely diagnosis and the need for prompt interventions in order to act on a positive developmental outcome. Ultimately, one of the goals is the stimulation of new scientific research on this topic, as well as the creation of strategies for application in practice.
