The Achilles tendon is, as we know from anatomy, the strongest and longest tendon in the human body. These two words, the strongest and longest, give it a reputation for being almost inviolable, but as we know from the examples from the everyday life of athletes and amateurs, Achilles tendon rupture is not such a rarity, since it participates in almost all our daily physical activities, which exposes it to great efforts. Rupture of the Achilles tendon usually occurs by the action of an indirect force. It occurs more often in men. The popularity of recreational sports in recent decades has led to a sharp increase in injuries to the Achilles tendon. At the moment when an injury occurs, a person feels severe pain, difficulty walking, and the main symptom that indicates an Achilles tendon injury is that the person cannot fit on the toes of the leg on which the Achilles tendon rupture occurred. Only the treatment of Achilles tendon can be conservative or surgical. Which method will be approached to the patient depends on his age, the extent of physical activity he engages in, and the intensity of the injury itself. In younger people, surgery is usually undertaken, while in the elderly population, conservative rehabilitation is applied. The possibility of recurrence of rupture after surgery is much less. Recovery is long-lasting and the return to full sports activity can take up to nine months. Rupture of the Achilles tendon is a serious injury, which sets back the sports career of a professional athlete, and some athletes never manage to regain the level of fitness they had before the injury itself.
