In this study we tried to establish whether there is a connection between the amount of IgM VCA, IgG VCA and IgG EBNA antibodies for EBV and results of a survey on injuries among athletes. Eight subjects signed the consent form. 50% of subjects withdrew from the study without giving a reason. Remaining subjects (n = 4) were male athletes, aged 20-22, from different sports. The study was performed in two steps. The first step was the measure the amount of IgM VCA, IgG VCA and IgG EBNA antibodies for EBV, from the subjects' blood samples. Blood was sampled at the Clinical Hospital Center Split, Firule. In the second step, subjects completed a anonymous online survey. The survey contained a modified version of the injury questionnarie: Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center Overuse Injury Questionnaire, (OSTRC – O2). The injury questonnaire was divided into 7 anatomical locations. The survey examined subjective impression of the magnitude, symptoms and consequences of injuries in the period of seven days prior to blood sampling. Results show low test sensitivity for measuring antibodies for EBV. Results also indicate there is positive correlation between pain and hours spent in training (adjusted 𝑅 2 = 0.682, p = 0.112). Results of one of the subjects indicate that athletes continue their sports activity with small changes despite the pain. We conclude that blood sampling from a vein is not an attractive option among athletes of this age group. In order to investigate the influence of EBV on chronic joint tissue inflamation among athletes, a different model of research should be used.
